  1. Date rape? It’s a song about throwback proprieties and saving face by putting up a socially acceptable defense to spending the night with a man before you are married. This was 1936. It wasn’t proper for women to stay with men overnight. In the end of the song they come together. She’s looking for a reason to stay. The tension in the song comes from her own desire to stay and society’s expectations that she’ll go.

    1. I understand what you’re saying, but it doesn’t make the dude any less creepy with some of those lines. “Say, what’s in this drink?” “Your lips look delicious.” Not putting off the right vibe for me 🙂
